Welcome to a space of hope and healing. If you’re reading this, you might be considering reaching out for support with disordered eating. As a therapist working with clients with disordered eating, I want to share what you can expect from the journey ahead and how we can work together to achieve lasting change.

The Path to Recovery: What to Expect

Recovery from disordered eating is a challenging and emotional journey. It requires honesty, commitment, and hard work. This path is not easy, but it is incredibly rewarding. Here’s what you can expect when you decide to take this step:

  1. Honesty and Commitment: Recovery demands a deep level of honesty with yourself and with me as your therapist. It’s about acknowledging your struggles and being open about your progress and setbacks. Commitment to the process is crucial, as it often involves homework and self-reflection outside of our sessions.

  2. Emotional Exploration: Disordered eating is often rooted in complex emotional issues. Together, we will explore these root causes to understand the underlying factors contributing to your eating behaviours. This exploration can be intense, but it is a vital part of the healing process.

  3. Collaborative Support: As your therapist, I use the MANTRA (Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults) approach, which is designed to support you through this journey. MANTRA is a NICE-evidenced approach to treating disordered eating. I receive supervision from eating disorder specialists to ensure you receive the best care possible. Additionally, with your consent, I may, however not always collaborate with your GP to monitor your physical health, including preliminary blood tests and an ECG.

  4. Regular Monitoring: Part of the process involves regular monitoring of your physical health. There may be times when we agree weight monitoring and discuss your challenges and progress openly. This is done in a compassionate and supportive environment to ensure your safety and well-being.

The MANTRA Approach

MANTRA is a structured therapy that focuses on understanding the factors that maintain your disordered eating. It involves:

  • Cognitive and Emotional Work: We will work on changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours related to eating, weight, and shape.

  • Developing Skills: You will learn skills to manage emotions and stress in healthier ways.

  • Building Motivation: We will work on enhancing your motivation to change and setting achievable goals.

For more information, you can visit the MANTRA website.

A Compassionate and Supportive Environment

My goal is to provide a compassionate and supportive space where you feel safe to explore your feelings and challenges. Recovery is a collaborative effort, and I am here to guide and support you every step of the way. Together, we can work towards understanding the work that needs to be done and making meaningful changes to overcome disordered eating.

Finding the Right Support

While I am dedicated to supporting you, I want to acknowledge that I am not an expert in every aspect of disordered eating. In some instances, I may not be the right person to provide the specific support you need. However, I am committed to helping you find the right resources and professionals who can assist you. If necessary, I will support you in connecting with specialists who can offer the expertise required for your unique situation.

Taking the First Step

Reaching out for help is a courageous first step towards recovery. If you’re ready to embark on this journey, know that you are not alone. I am here to support you with empathy, expertise, and a commitment to your well-being.
